Fuerteventura to Get Its Own Civil Guard Commander
The Ministry of the Interior has announced the creation of a Commander position for the Puerto del Rosario company. Until now, the highest rank on the island was Captain of the Civil Guard, which will now report to the command.
This development is crucial for a new security paradigm requested by all administrations and political parties. It calls for changes in the police command structure, as the Civil Guard is the most present force on Fuerteventura, especially in La Oliva, Pájara, Tuineje, Antigua, and Betancuria, where the National Police has no jurisdiction.
Sources consulted by the newspaper also indicate that, in the short term, the staffing catalog for all posts on the island will be expanded, adding an average of 15 positions per location—namely Corralejo, Gran Tarajal, Morro Jable, and Puerto del Rosario.
USECIC Unit
The same sources confirm that a USECIC unit will be created in Fuerteventura, comprising 30 officers and operating from the Majorca base throughout the province.
The USECIC (Citizen Security Unit of the Command) is a permanent operational unit of the Civil Guard, designed to reinforce public safety in high‑risk situations or specialized needs. It acts as a rapid‑response force, supporting other units in operations, crowd control, and responding to threats such as terrorism, drug trafficking, and other serious crimes.
