Fuerteventura tourism forum puts staff housing and visitor pressures on the agenda

Tourism businesses and officials met in Fuerteventura on 29 October to discuss recruitment, housing, safety and managing visitor numbers across the eastern islands.

Staff housing, recruitment difficulties and pressure on island resources were discussed at a tourism forum in Fuerteventura on 29 October 2026.

Skål Internacional Canarias Islas Orientales and the Fuerteventura tourism business association ASOFUER organised the event. It brought together businesses, public authorities and specialists from Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. They met at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos de Fuerteventura.

Discussions focused on how the two islands could improve tourism’s economic and social value, rather than simply increase visitor numbers.

Housing, transport and recruitment

A staffing session examined difficulties filling certain roles, as well as training, housing and transport for workers. Businesses also discussed absenteeism and leave due to temporary inability to work, alongside ways to attract and retain staff.

Canary Islands Tourism and Employment Minister Jéssica de León said the regional government was working towards more stable, better-quality jobs. Its approach included retaining skilled staff, innovation and wider use of digital technology. She also highlighted greater involvement for the local economy and Canarian suppliers in tourism’s supply chain.

De León said Fuerteventura and Lanzarote needed to manage visitor flows better and increase the value tourism generates. This should also reduce pressure on land and resources.

Safety and technology

A tourism safety panel discussed how public authorities, security services and businesses could coordinate their work. Topics included prevention and communication in tourist areas.

The final main session examined artificial intelligence and other technologies. Participants discussed how these could improve efficiency, automate processes and help people make decisions. They also considered online security, data protection and the need for human oversight.

ASOFUER president Antonio Hormiga stressed that housing, mobility, staffing, safety and digital technology were linked challenges. These affected businesses and the quality of the destination. Cabildo president Lola García also called for joint work on housing, mobility and training.

The forum ended with calls for closer public–private cooperation and stronger coordination between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. There were also calls to turn the professional discussions into practical proposals. The report did not set out a timetable for specific measures.
