Fuerteventura under yellow rain and storm warnings as Bruna approaches

Aemet has issued yellow warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms in Fuerteventura on Sunday 8 November, with up to 20mm of rain possible in an hour.

Fuerteventura faces yellow warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms on Sunday 8 November as storm Bruna approaches the Canary Islands. The warnings run from noon until 11.59pm, with rain potentially reaching 20 millimetres in an hour.

Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, puts the probability of both heavy rain and thunderstorms at between 40% and 70%. The Canary Islands Government has also declared a pre-alert for rain and storms, taking effect at 9pm on Saturday 7 November.

What the forecast says

The regional emergency authority says Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa could see intense rainfall of 20mm an hour or more, although it does not expect the rain to persist as long as on the more mountainous islands.

The episode is forecast to begin in La Palma on Saturday night and move progressively eastwards during Sunday, eventually affecting the whole archipelago. Localised thunderstorms could be intense and accompanied by strong gusts of wind.

The Canary Islands Government says there is considerable uncertainty about where the storms will develop, how they will move and how intense they will be, so forecasts may change. Its emergency authority will monitor conditions and update the declarations if necessary.

The regional rain pre-alert covers Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa, while a rain alert has been declared for La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The storm pre-alert applies across the archipelago.
