The “Fuerte por Naturaleza” program led by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through the Tourism Department, incorporates a new initiative, AgroFuer, following an agreement with the Chamber of Commerce of Fuerteventura and the support of Next Generation EU funds. AgroFuer aims to reactivate the economy of the island’s interior and integrate it into tourist development.
Tourism Councilor Marlene Figueroa explains that “the tourism sector, properly understood, generates employment and acts as a driving force for local economies,” so the policies of the administrations with competencies in the matter must ensure that this driving effect is a reality throughout the island.
Marlene Figueroa adds that “AgroFuer is born so that the majorero producers furthest from the coast, those who give meaning and identity to Fuerteventura, also benefit from a sector that has managed to create wealth around the beaches.”
The AgroFuer agreement, signed by Councilor Figueroa and the president of the Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Navigation of Fuerteventura, Juan Jesús Rodríguez Marichal, is included in the “Fuerte por Naturaleza” program, of the Tourist Sustainability Plan in Destination, and has a budget of 115,000 euros, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Spanish Government financed by the European Union (Next Generation EU funds).
The AgroFuer project includes the organization of a large fair for the promotion of zero-kilometer products and direct sales, as well as the creation of two traditional craft workshops, taught by majorero artisans, with island-wide projection.
The fair will be oriented towards the promotion of local products, fostering the direct connection between producers and consumers, with the aim of promoting proximity consumption, supporting the primary sector and highlighting the value of those areas of the island’s interior that do not benefit directly from tourism.
“This aims to encourage a more equitable distribution of the economic benefits derived from the sector,” reiterates Marlene Figueroa.
Similarly, the holding of two craft workshops at different points on the island territory is contemplated, aimed at enhancing traditional trades, promoting the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and strengthening craftsmanship.
