García calls for islands to be exempt from airport fee hike
“Co‑management of the airport network is not a whim; it is a right recognized in our Statute, and we are talking about the economic and social development of the islands.”
Lola García, president of the Fuerteventura Island Council, demands that the islands be exempt from the airport fee hike announced by AENA, “as it would affect our economic and social development as islands.”
García welcomed AENA’s announcement of a multi‑million‑euro investment in Spanish airports, a plan that includes funding for the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura, “with improvement actions that our airports desperately need.” However, she warned that “these investments must not lead to higher fees in the Canary Islands, since our mobility relies almost exclusively on air transport.”
“Supra‑island administrations must consider our reality as an ultra‑peripheral region, avoiding unilateral decisions that affect the management of infrastructure that is strategic for our economic development and the mobility of Canary residents.” – García
She added that “it is essential to make co‑management of the airport network effective, as stipulated in our Statute of Autonomy.” “Airport co‑management is not a whim; it is a recognized right, and we are talking about the future of the islands.”
The Canary Islands decree promoted by the regional government also calls for the islands to have representation on AENA’s Board of Directors.
