Garden cleaning at Canary Islands airports proves effective again

The vice‑president of the island council announced the long‑awaited news following a new contract award.

The situation regarding the cleaning, conservation and maintenance of outdoor areas at the Canary Islands’ airports has taken a step forward after numerous efforts to resolve the fallout from the previous contractor.

In this regard, the vice‑president of the island council, Blas Acosta, told this outlet that, since 2 October, the work of the new contractor is underway and that “a problem that was complicating workers’ lives, relations with institutions and, above all, the aesthetics of the gateway to the archipelago’s most touristic islands has been untangled.”

The company AEMA Hispánica, the former awardee of the garden‑maintenance service for the airports of Gran Canaria, Tenerife South, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Tenerife North, faced payment delays to its employees and contract breaches in virtually all of its agreements with public entities.

Because of this, after confirming the company’s inability to meet its obligations, AENA terminated the contract with AEMA Hispánica.

Following AEMA Hispánica’s filing of a temporary lay‑off (ERTE) in May 2025 and its formal declaration in June 2025 by the labour authority, a new tender was launched. The tender was awarded to Traslimp, part of the Mitie group, which signed the contract on 1 October and began effective execution on Thursday 2 October simultaneously at the five affected airports.
