German tourism generates a €1.17 billion economic impact in Fuerteventura

The Nordic market is a central target of the Tourism Board’s strategy

The global relevance of the ITB Berlin tourism fair is evident in announcements that go beyond the German market itself, such as the one made by travel giant TUI: starting this summer it will launch a special promotion campaign to boost its new direct flights between Fuerteventura and Sweden.

“We are working to attract a tourist who is more interested in the destination, responsible toward the territory they visit, and with a higher spending capacity. That spending should translate into an improved quality of life for residents,” explains Marlene Figueroa, Tourism Councillor of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura.

Recovering market share in the Nordic region has been a strategic line set by the Fuerteventura Tourism Board for several years. In December 2025, TUI Nordic announced the reinstatement of direct, non‑stop flights from Stockholm (Sweden) to Fuerteventura for the winter 2025/26 season, reinforcing the Board’s efforts across the Nordic countries to position the island among their preferred destinations.

At that time, Councillor Figueroa highlighted that TUI Nordic’s move to restore direct connections with Fuerteventura “is a milestone in our goal” of repositioning the destination in the Nordic market, which is distinguished by strong environmental values, sustainability criteria, and a higher spending power.

The second day of the fair featured meetings with representatives of international tour operators such as Expedia Group, Viajes All Sun, TUI Group, Travel Zoo, FVW Medien, AnexTour, and Holiday Check, as well as participation in the Canarias EU‑prime promo event and attendance at the Regenerative Tourism Commission of the Canary Islands Government organized by Promotur.

The German market, together with the British market, remains one of the fundamental pillars for both the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura. In 2025, Fuerteventura welcomed 784,752 German passengers, generating a total economic impact of €1,170,483,904 on the island. Regular flights to Fuerteventura continue to operate from Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich and Cologne.
