Government scraps five‑cent gasoline rebate in Fuertevenutura
Bonuses remain in La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro
Starting Wednesday, 1 October, fuel will no longer be subsidised on the island of Fuerteventura because the average price differential with Gran Canaria and Tenerife was €0.03 per litre (measured from July to 15 September), which is below the thresholds that prioritise aid for islands with higher cost overruns.
A subsidy will still be applied in El Hierro and La Gomera—€0.25 / l and €0.20 / l, respectively—and in La Palma it is set at €0.20 / l, also taking into account the island’s recovery process. These measures take effect on 1 October 2025, according to the Order of 23 September published in the Official Gazette No. 193.
The decision is reigniting tensions among the islands of the archipelago, especially as the minimum fuel prices in La Palma are now very close to those in Fuerteventura.
