Government to Probe Sudden Fuel Price Surge on the Islands

The events will be examined on the same day the war began, with the findings forwarded to the Canary Islands Competition Defense Council.

The Vice President and Minister of Economy of the Canary Islands Government, Manuel Domínguez, announced on Thursday that his administration will carry out an “inspection” of the sudden increase in fuel prices across the islands, coinciding with the outbreak of the war in Iran.

In statements to journalists, Domínguez emphasized that “what has happened” will be analyzed by the General Directorate of Commerce and the Price Observatory, and that the information gathered will be sent to the Canary Islands Competition Defense Council.

He did not hide the government’s concern over the price surge and expects the study to “determine whether what has occurred is normal or if there is an extraordinary situation that would require government intervention.”

“Our intention is that prices in our territory are monitored and then appropriate measures are taken,” he said, citing the case of the energy zero policy in La Gomera, which ended with a sanction file issued by the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

“From the Government of the Canary Islands we have only one way of acting, and it will be the same now,” he added.
