Gran Canaria Opens €35 Million Cruise Terminal
In Fuerteventura, a tent that reportedly cost €1.2 million was recently opened, sparking criticism over the disparity in spending across the province’s ports. While Lanzarote received a €4 million investment, the new terminal in Las Palmas represents a €35 million commitment that many locals view as disproportionate compared to the modest facilities elsewhere.
Inauguration in Las Palmas
The Celebrity Apex, carrying 4,000 passengers from Lisbon, was the first ship to dock at the brand‑new Cruise Terminal of the Port of Las Palmas on Thursday. Operated by Global Ports Canary Islands, the terminal is located on the Santa Catalina quay in the capital of Gran Canaria.
According to the Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP), the opening marks the start of operations for the largest cruise terminal in Europe. The 14,000 m² building spans two floors and features:
- Three boarding walkways
- Capacity to handle up to four vessels simultaneously
- Advanced systems that enhance safety and maneuver efficiency
An adjoining outdoor area of more than 17,800 m² includes pedestrian zones, landscaped gardens, and a restored palm grove that connects the terminal to the city boulevard.
“This space represents a qualitative leap in our infrastructure and services,” said Beatriz Calzada, president of the APLP. “With this terminal we reinforce the Canary Islands’ position in the Mid‑Atlantic, cement Las Palmas as a reference hub for both base‑port and transit cruise tourism, and showcase a facility designed from the ground up with sustainability in mind.”
A €40 Million Investment Plan for Provincial Ports
The cruise terminal is part of a broader €40 million modernization program driven by Global Ports Canary. The allocation breaks down as follows:
- Gran Canaria: €35 million for the new terminal
- Lanzarote: €4 million for new facilities
- Fuerteventura: a €1.2 million tent for passenger reception
Susana Gutiérrez, General Director of Global Ports Canary Islands, explained the strategic vision:
“We are very satisfied with the launch of the new cruise terminal. This project signals the beginning of a new era for the Port of La Luz. With this infrastructure we take a decisive step toward professionalising cruise services and reinforcing our commitment to sustainable growth on the island. Our immediate goal is to strengthen Gran Canaria’s standing as an internationally recognised cruise destination.”
The investment aims to modernise port infrastructure improve passenger experience, and promote sustainable tourism across the Canary Islands.
