The Cabildo’s Publication Service has edited this work as an emotional tribute to the author’s family, neighbors, and the traditional life of the El Charco district.
Book launch
The General Island Archive hosted the presentation of La gente de mi barrio (The People of My Neighborhood) by Gregorio Fulgencio, a Cultural Heritage publication of the Cabildo issued by its Publication Service.
Gregorio Fulgencio, a teacher of Basic General Education, has devoted more than 35 years to teaching. He is widely recognized for his work as an educator and for his tenure as director of the CEIP San José de Calasanz in Puerto del Rosario, a position he held until his retirement in 2016.
With this book, Fulgencio offers an emotional homage to his relatives, neighbors, and the everyday life of the El Charco neighbourhood (Puerto del Rosario). The volume combines verses and photographs, inviting readers to wander through memories, customs, and characters that marked an era and shape the district’s identity.
“The response to this book’s presentation has been overwhelming, both from the El Charco neighbourhood and the island of Fuerteventura,” said Rayco León, Councillor for Cultural Heritage.
The work joins the Letras de la Isla collection, an initiative aimed at promoting and giving visibility to local literary production.
Official acknowledgments
Puerto del Rosario mayor David de Vera thanked the Cabildo and its Publication Service “for valuing the essence of those who fight for the place where they have built their life project.”
Historian Marcial Morera introduced the author. Born in the former Puerto Cabras, Gregorio Fulgencio combined his early teaching jobs with administrative work at the INPESCASA canning factory and a stint in the military service in the Sahara.
His professional trajectory began in various schools across Fuerteventura, where he taught adult literacy, therapeutic pedagogy, and primary education. In 1987 he joined CEIP San José de Calasanz, first as a therapeutic pedagogy teacher, later as a primary school teacher specializing in mathematics and natural sciences, and finally as the school’s director for the last ten years, until his 2016 retirement. In total, he dedicated more than thirty‑five years to education.
Book content
In La gente de mi barrio, Fulgencio presents, on one hand, a portrait of local people who, through effort and sacrifice, built their lives. On the other hand, he sketches a brief history of the El Charco neighbourhood: its origins, the founding families, traditional occupations, shared customs, religious festivities, and neighbourly relations that turned the area into a large extended family.
In short, La gente de mi barrio is a memoir, a heartfelt tribute to the author’s family and to the El Charco district, written from a subjective, emotive, and simple perspective by Gregorio Fulgencio.
