Hammerhead shark spotted on a Lanzarote beach
The species is common in Canary waters and usually does not pose a danger
A specimen of a hammerhead shark was found stranded on La Garita beach in Arrieta early Saturday morning. The Environment Service of the Lanzarote Cabildo took charge of the animal and has begun the necessary procedures for its collection and study. So far, no further details about its condition have been released, although the shark was located by local residents who alerted the authorities.
Hammerhead sharks (family Sphyrnidae) occasionally inhabit the waters of the Canary archipelago, but sightings near swimming areas are rare. These sharks prefer open‑ocean or deep‑water habitats, though they sometimes approach the islands, making each sighting a notable event.
Regarding the potential danger of its proximity to the coast, specialists agree that shark attacks in the Canary Islands are extremely uncommon. In general, this type of shark does not show aggression toward humans unless it feels threatened or cornered.
