Health Authority Requests Land from Antigua Council to Launch 24‑Hour Emergency Service
The Health Department, through the General Directorate of Economic Resources, has asked the Antigua Town Hall to transfer a plot of land adjoining the municipality’s current Health Center. The goal is to advance the creation of a Continuous Care Point (PAC) and a Conventional Radiology Area.
This request represents another step by the Fuerteventura Health Area in the expansion of the Antigua Health Center to provide the necessary space for launching a 24‑hour, continuously staffed emergency service.
The initiative aligns with the Health Department’s commitment to improve medical care in the municipality and is supported by a €100,000 allocation in the 2026 Canary Islands General Budget earmarked for the PAC’s implementation.
Current Facilities
- The center presently has an Emergency Area with five distinct spaces covering 76.31 m².
- It handles urgent cases during the center’s operating hours, Monday to Friday, 08:00–20:00.
Planned Expansion
On 9 December 2025, the General Directorate of Assistance Programs issued a Functional Plan for the future PAC, specifying that a total built area of 376.60 m² is required to properly house the new service and the adjoining radiology area.
Technical reports from the General Directorate of Economic Resources conclude that the existing building lacks sufficient physical capacity for these additions. Expanding upward would necessitate structural work on the entire facility, forcing a temporary closure and relocation of services.
Therefore, the cession of the adjacent parcel is considered the most viable solution to develop the needed expansion and enable the definitive implementation of the PAC.
Interim Measures
While administrative and technical procedures are underway, the Fuerteventura Health Area continues to strengthen medical assistance in Antigua by:
- Increasing medical staff.
- Boosting overall care activity.
- Expanding services such as Teledermatology and Retinography.
