Health Department Requests Antigua Council to Transfer

The health‑center expansion project includes the addition of a Conventional Radiology Area.

The Health Ministry, through the Directorate General of Economic Resources, formally asked the Antigua City Council on Wednesday, May 6, to transfer a parcel of land adjoining the municipality’s current Health Center. The aim is to move forward with the establishment of a Continuous Care Point (PAC) and a Conventional Radiology Area.

The request marks another step by the Fuerteventura Health Authority in the ongoing expansion of the Antigua Health Center, providing the space needed to launch a 24‑hour emergency service with continuous care.

This initiative aligns with the Health Ministry’s commitment to improve medical services in the municipality and is supported by a specific allocation of €100,000 in the 2026 Canary Islands Autonomous Community General Budget for the PAC’s implementation.

Current facilities

  • The center presently has an Emergency Area with five distinct rooms, covering a total of 76.31 m².
  • It handles urgent cases during the center’s operating hours, Monday to Friday, from 08:00 to 20:00.

Planned expansion

  • On December 9, 2025, the Directorate General of Assistive Programs issued a functional plan for the future PAC, specifying the need for a total built area of 376.60 m² to properly house the new service and the adjoining radiology area.
  • Technical reports from the Directorate General of Economic Resources concluded that the existing building lacks sufficient physical capacity to incorporate these new spaces. Adding floors would require structural modifications to the entire building, forcing a temporary closure of the center and relocation of medical activities.

Reason for the land request

Given these constraints, the Health Department has asked the Antigua City Council to transfer the adjacent parcel as the most viable solution to carry out the necessary expansion and enable the definitive installation of the PAC.

Interim measures

While administrative and technical procedures are underway, the Fuerteventura Health Authority continues to strengthen medical assistance in Antigua by:

  • Increasing medical staff
  • Boosting overall care activity
  • Expanding services such as tele‑dermatology and retinography.
