Improvements at La Oliva Biological Station

The La Oliva Biological Station is a key facility in Fuerteventura for the recovery of wild flora and fauna.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura through its Works and Machinery Service, has launched a refurbishment project for the La Oliva Biological Station. The work is part of the “Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” program – described by Cabildo president Lola García as “an ambitious initiative to conserve and beautify every corner of the island.”

“The ‘Beautiful’ program includes not only cleaning and clearing actions in natural areas but also small‑scale works that nevertheless bring a great improvement to the quality of a place, as is the case of the Biological Station,” explained Blas Acosta, Councillor for Works and Machinery.

The La Oliva Biological Station serves as a recovery centre for wild plants and animals and also houses a necropsy room and an educational classroom.

Scope of the Works

The interventions will take place within the current station premises, specifically:

  • The parking area
  • The land adjacent to the storage building
  • The open space next to the white “tarajal” (dry stone wall)
  • The exhibition zone of the Canarian Garden

Main Actions (Three Key Projects)

  • Installation of shaded areas – New pergolas will be erected to create comfortable, shaded zones for visitors.
  • Creation of an accessible pathway – A levelled and prepared trail will connect the Canarian Garden to the Nature Classroom. The surface will be designed for smooth transit, with particular attention to people with reduced mobility.
  • Development of a new parking lot – The area beside the storage building will be cleared, cleaned, and all stored items removed. The ground will then be levelled, filled, and compacted using granular material (recebe) to create a stable parking surface.

Timeline and Funding

The “Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” contract, managed by Blas Acosta’s department and awarded to Gesplan, covers a 15‑month period (2024‑2025). Over this timeframe, €4 million of the Cabildo’s own funds will be invested in roughly one hundred “local actions” that directly enhance natural conservation, improve visitor experience, and raise the quality of life for residents.
