In-person classes canceled Thursday in the western islands and La Graciosa due to Storm Therese
Gran Canaria will join the remote‑learning schedule in the late afternoon and evening, but morning classes will remain in‑person on the island.
In‑person lessons at all schools in the western province’s islands, as well as on La Graciosa, will be cancelled for Thursday’s session and shifted to a fully remote format because of the approaching storm “Therese.”
Gran Canaria, however, will switch to remote learning only for the late‑afternoon and evening period. Moreover, remote classes will be extended to the entire archipelago for the whole day on Friday, March 20, the regional Education Department announced to the media on Wednesday.
The decision follows recommendations and preventive measures issued by the Department of Territorial Policy, Cohesion and Water, through the Directorate General of Emergencies and Civil Protection. The aim is to avoid travel that could endanger the population—especially the educational community—amid the convergence of weather factors expected to affect the islands in the coming days.
The department emphasizes that the measure also applies to non‑teaching staff, administration, and service personnel.
Residents are urged to stay tuned to the official communication channels of the Department and the Government of the Canary Islands for any updates.
