Isaí Blanco Calls for a Tourism Moratorium on Fuerteventura

The mayor of La Oliva, speaking at the International Tourism Fair of Fuerteventura, outlined the need for a tourism moratorium for the island. Blanco explained how the island’s rapid growth has become a turning point for Fuerteventura’s structural imbalances:

“There is no doubt that we are facing intense demographic and tourist growth not only in La Oliva but throughout the entire island. We are using the framework of the ITB Berlin to make our intentions regarding tourism in Fuerteventura even clearer: we do not want more tourists in quantity; we are looking for higher‑quality visitors.”

“This situation demands a profound change in the way administrations govern; therefore, we must define Fuerteventura’s carrying capacity with a tourism moratorium that respects the limits of the local community,” Blanco emphasized.

Tourism councilor David Fajardo added:

“Fuerteventura must be a resilient island, as our people face major challenges such as its characteristic arid terrain, limited resources, and an already exceeded carrying capacity. With this complementary proposal we aim to continue generating prosperity through quality tourism without exacerbating the deep imbalances the island already faces: pressure on the land, difficulties accessing housing, overload of basic services, loss of landscape and our identity.”
