Island's First Emergency Coordination Center Opens in Corradejo

The first Municipal Operational Coordination Center (CECOPAL) on the island will enable centralized action in the face of emergencies, events or incidents, integrating all municipal services such as local police, firefighters, and lifeguards. The La Oliva City Council has set up this space alongside the Local Police facilities.

The La Oliva City Council has launched the first Municipal Operational Coordination Center (CECOPAL) of Fuerteventura, an infrastructure designed to improve response to emergencies and large‑scale events in the north of the island.

The new center is situated in Corralejo, in a room adjoining the Local Police headquarters, and will coordinate the work of the various municipal services and operational bodies when faced with adverse weather phenomena, fires, health emergencies, or mass‑gathering events.

CECOPAL will act as a single command point, equipped to assess situations in real time and make strategic decisions to mobilise human and material resources efficiently. The services involved include Local Police, Civil Protection, Firefighters, lifeguards, social services, public works, traffic, cleaning, environment, water, street lighting, and specialised technical staff.

The opening of the center adds to other municipal safety measures introduced during this legislative term, such as increasing the number of local police officers, installing video‑surveillance cameras, implementing a canine unit, and reinstating UMA agents, the council highlighted in a statement.

Prevention, Planning and Management of Emergency Resources

In the same release, La Oliva mayor Isaí Blanco said:

“CECOPAL represents a key advance in safety and coordination for any type of emergency or event the municipality must face.”

He added that it is “another example of how we reinforce our commitment to prevention, planning and the management of personal and material resources in emergencies.”

Fuerteventura Cabildo president Lola García, who attended the visit, emphasized:

“This center is essential for coordinating emergencies in the municipality, with a fundamental role played by the Government of the Canary Islands, whose Emergency Department, led by Manolo Miranda, has made the creation of the first CECOPAL possible.”

She explained that the facility will maintain direct contact with the regional government to activate additional resources when needed, especially given the growing frequency of extreme weather events.

First deputy mayor Julio Santana added:

“Investing in this type of center is investing in the safety of our residents and visitors.”

He expressed the governing coalition’s intention to continue expanding emergency services in coordination with other administrations.

The La Oliva City Council’s statement concluded that the initiative “strengthens the strategy pursued by the municipal governing group to work in favor of improved safety and emergency response in La Oliva since the beginning of its mandate.”
