Jana González calls Corralejo pier a “more respectful” improvement

Canary Parliament member Jana González Alonso (CCa) addressed the new Corralejo pier project in the Commission of Public Works, Transport and Housing, highlighting its improved design and reduced environmental impact.

A Design That Fixes Past Shortcomings

González praised the Canary Islands Government for delivering a plan that corrects the deficiencies of the 2021 “Pacto de las Flores” proposal. The revised design:

  • Improves operational efficiency and safety of the port.
  • Guarantees conservation of the environment.
  • Places the new basin outside the Natura 2000 network and within the area designated for port activities.

She noted that the project has already been endorsed by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which confirms that it significantly reduces the surface area occupied by the new infrastructure while still meeting the real maritime traffic needs of Corralejo.

Environmental Compliance and Ministry Support

According to González, the ministry’s backing stems from the project’s ability to lower impacts on cetaceans, turtles and seabirds. She emphasized that:

“The foreseeable impact of the project on marine biodiversity and protected spaces would be considerably lower.”

The ministerial assessment indicates that the new proposal mitigates the adverse effects identified in the earlier plan.

Protected Areas and Mitigation Measures

The 2021 design threatened several protected sites within the Natura 2000 network, including:

  • LIC “Maritime space of the east and south of Lanzarote – Fuerteventura.”
  • ZEC “Sebadales de Corralejo.”
  • ZEPA “Marine space of the Bocayna.”

González argued that the original scheme lacked sufficient compensatory measures from the promoter to offset these impacts, a point also highlighted by the ministry.

Local Political Backing and the Way Forward

She recalled that the previous project would have caused obvious negative consequences for the people of Corralejo, a concern raised by the Local Political Council of the Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura.

During the current legislative term, the Ayuntamiento of La Oliva and the Cabildo of Fuerteventura have maintained the petition for a more sustainable solution. The Canary Government has now responded by adapting the project to the island’s real needs.

“I encourage Minister Pablo Rodríguez to keep working hand‑in‑hand with the Cabildo and the Ayuntamiento to finalize and launch the construction without further delays, for the benefit of the Corralejo pier,” González urged.

Government’s Response

Pablo Rodríguez Valido, Councillor for Public Works, Housing and Mobility, replied that the administration has developed a design that enhances port operability while minimizing environmental impact. He explained that multiple proposals have been submitted to the ministry until the most viable option—with reduced impact across all evaluated parameters—was selected
