Kites Set to Soar in Corralejo This Weekend with Sunny Skies and Light Winds
La Playa de La Concha in El Cotillo welcomed the first kite flyers of the 38th International Kite Festival of Corralejo.
Despite forecasts of strong winds and rain on Thursday across Fuerteventura, the weather is expected to improve dramatically from Friday onward, making the weekend ideal for kite‑flying.
More than 200 kite enthusiasts from across Europe have already arrived on the beaches of La Oliva to take part in the 38th edition of the International Kite Festival of Corralejo. The opening day offered perfect conditions—steady wind and sunshine—for flying.
During this first day, kite flyers tested the breeze on La Concha Beach in El Cotillo. Gusts reached up to 35 km/h and mild temperatures allowed kites of all shapes and sizes to soar, from small colorful fish to magical spirals exceeding 15 metres in length. The aerial display over the sea turned the island’s skies into a benchmark for similar festivals throughout Europe. From Friday, participants will move to the larger beaches of Corralejo.
The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, and the councilor for Tourism and Environment, David Fajardo, enjoyed the opening day on site, accompanied by Education and Festivities councilor Omaira Saavedra, Garden and Green Areas councilor Verónica Saavedra, Finance and Procurement councilor Juan José Rodríguez, and Primary Sector and Cleanliness councilor Rubén González.
