La Cornisa Added to Municipal Protection Catalog

Puerto del Rosario takes a new step in processing the municipal protection catalogue to strengthen the conservation of historic heritage

The City Council of Puerto del Rosario held an extraordinary plenary session on Wednesday, marking a new milestone in the development of the Municipal Protection Catalogue, a key document for the conservation and valorisation of the municipality’s historic, architectural, ethnographic, and archaeological heritage.

During the plenary, officials reported on the outcome of the public information period that followed the document’s initial approval. This process ensured transparency and citizen participation. 179 objections were received during this phase and have been analysed and responded to by the catalogue’s drafting team.

Mayor David de Vera highlighted the importance of this instrument for safeguarding the municipality’s identity.

“The Municipal Protection Catalogue is a fundamental tool for preserving the history and identity of Puerto del Rosario. Our goal is to ensure that the town’s development respects the elements that belong to our collective memory and cultural legacy,” he said.

Among the issues discussed was the proposal to re‑incorporate the properties located in the La Cornisa area, which had been excluded from the initial approval and had generated numerous objections. In this regard, reports issued by the competent heritage authorities of the Canary Government and the Fuerteventura Island Council support their inclusion in the catalogue, in accordance with the Canary Islands Cultural Heritage Law.

The proposal also received backing from submissions made by associations, collectives, and private individuals, who likewise requested that these properties be added to the protection catalogue.

Historical Heritage councilor David de León explained that the procedure reflects the City Council’s commitment to legality, transparency, and the protection of municipal heritage.

“A protection catalogue is not a list of prohibitions. It is a map of our identity. It is the tool that guarantees future generations can continue to read, in our buildings, streets, and public spaces, the story of who we were and who we are,” he affirmed.

The dossier also includes the addition of 60 new heritage assets to the municipal catalogue. These new entries consist of architectural, ethnographic, and archaeological assets, thereby expanding the inventory of protected elements in the municipality.

In this way, the City Council of Puerto del Rosario continues to advance a strategic document that will identify, protect, and valorise the town’s historic heritage, ensuring that the elements forming its history are recorded and preserved for future generations.
