La Oliva celebrates World Car-Free Day with Corralejo schoolchildren
Environmental awareness, healthy habits, and the promotion of cycling marked the World Car‑Free Day organized by the La Oliva City Council on Monday morning, 22 September, in Corralejo.
The Environment Department, led by David Fajardo, collaborated with the Island Council of Fuerteventura—presided over by Lola García and represented in the Transport Ministry by Luis González—to host an event for students from the CEIP Bernabé Figueroa, María Castrillo, and Antoñito El Farero schools. The day focused on the importance of caring for the environment and adopting healthy habits from an early age.
During the morning, the children took part in a variety of activities that allowed them to:
- Observe the impact of carbon footprints on the surroundings.
- Learn about pollution and its effects.
- Play games and navigate traffic circuits.
- Participate in discussions about environmental consciousness.
The program concluded with a road‑safety talk delivered by the Local Police.
“World Car‑Free Day is the perfect occasion to use the day to show our boys and girls the importance of their actions toward the environment, the use of bicycles, and, in short, activities that let them live healthier lives while protecting our most precious asset, nature,” said Mayor Isaí Blanco.
“Instilling in our students the significance of their actions is truly relevant not only for environmental awareness but also for the daily lives of future generations. Building healthy habits at this age enables young people to adopt a lifestyle that benefits their health on all levels,” added Environment Councilor David Fajardo.
Environmental guides were also present to support the activities, underscoring the council’s commitment to fostering eco‑conscious behavior and healthy habits among the next generation.
