La Oliva film explores Fuerteventura’s traditional prayer healers
A film about Lucrecia Rodríguez, 94, and Fuerteventura’s prayer-healing traditions was scheduled for La Oliva’s Los Finados programme on 1 November.
A film about one of La Oliva’s last traditional prayer healers was scheduled for 1 November 2026 at 19:00. The screening was to take place at the church of La Candelaria. It was part of La Oliva’s events to mark Los Finados.
The 24-minute film, La Santiguadora, Líbranos del Mal, was made by Concha de Ganzo. It records the life and work of Lucrecia Rodríguez, 94. She learnt the practice at the age of 14 from a woman named Ana. According to the report, Rodríguez offers her help without asking for payment.
Diario de Fuerteventura announced the screening on 30 October. The supplied report does not confirm whether it later took place.
Preserving an island tradition
The film records Rodríguez’s private prayers. It also explores a tradition passed down through generations. María Elena Gutiérrez, an anthropologist who studies people and cultures, explains how women offered care and reassurance. They helped in communities where other support was scarce.
Gutiérrez describes their knowledge as part of the island’s intangible cultural heritage. Her account does not establish whether the rituals are medically effective.
Historian Pedro Carreño also discusses the importance of legends in Fuerteventura’s culture.
The film features island actresses Francisca Medina, Leticia Martel, Inma Machuca, Carmen Andrada and Lucrecia Romero. They are shown walking in mourning clothes towards the cross at Fimbapaire. Fabiola Socas provides music and vocals. Carlos de Saá is responsible for the camera work.
La Oliva council’s culture department sponsors the production, with support from the Cabildo’s Cultural Heritage Service.
