La Oliva proposes a tourism moratorium at the Berlin ITB

Mayor Isaí Blanco defended from Germany that “we are looking for a higher‑quality visitor,” and that to achieve this “we must define the island’s carrying capacity,” not only for the municipality of La Oliva but for the whole of Fuerteventura. Councilor David Fajardo added his support, pointing to the overload of housing, territory, basic services, and the loss of landscapes and identity.

The La Oliva City Council, present at the ITB fair in Berlin, used the German capital to send a measured message to the tourism sector.

“We do not want more tourists in quantity; what we are looking for is a visitor of higher quality,” said La Oliva’s mayor, Isaí Blanco.

In a context of rising demographic and tourist growth “not only in La Oliva but across the entire island,” the northern councilor noted, the ITB platform was taken as an opportunity to make the municipality’s intentions even clearer.

Blanco argued that the situation “requires a profound change in the way administrations govern,” adding:

“We must delimit Fuerteventura’s carrying capacity with a tourism moratorium that respects the limits of the Majorero community.”

Tourism councilor David Fajardo reinforced this stance, emphasizing the need to continue “generating prosperity through a quality tourist without aggravating the deep imbalances the island already faces,” namely:

  • Pressure on the territory
  • Difficulty accessing housing
  • Overload of basic services
  • Loss of landscape and our identity

“Fuerteventura must be a resilient island, because our people face great challenges such as its characteristic arid terrain, limited resources, and a carrying capacity that has already been exceeded,” the councilor declared.

The La Oliva City Council released a press statement confirming the mayor’s and councilor’s positions, reminding that its Tourism Department has been presenting a complementary promotional offer at tourism fairs since January’s FITUR.

Continuing this line of work, La Oliva highlighted at the Berlin ITB new municipal attractions, including the Interpretation Center of the Water Route and the Castillo del Tostón, as well as a schedule of sporting and leisure events.
