La Pared to Get Water Treatment Plant

The new EDAR will have an initial capacity of 210 m³/day, with the possibility of expansion to 420 m³/day.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has given the green light for the construction of a new wastewater‑treatment plant in the La Pared urbanisation. Earlier today, the governing board of the Island Water Council (Consejo Insular de Aguas, CIAF) approved the authorization for the Pájara City Council to carry out the project in that part of the municipality.

Project approval

The president of the Cabildo, Lola García, highlighted the ongoing work of the Cabildo through the Island Water Council:

“The work carried out by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Island Water Council, continues to improve the integral water cycle across the entire island. From the island corporation we have planned and promoted all necessary improvements to enhance the water service on the island, with actions aimed at re‑using the water cycle—something fundamental on an island like Fuerteventura.”

Water councilor Adargoma Hernández explained that the existing facility suffers from structural, operational, and capacity limitations, making it unable to meet the current and foreseeable needs of La Pared while also failing to meet current technical and regulatory standards. Consequently, a new infrastructure will be built that matches the specific needs of the area.

Complementary actions

Hernández added that, together with the recent expansion and upgrade of the La Lajita plant (authorized last November), “two important actions have already been authorized for the municipality of Pájara, in coordination with the City Council, to keep advancing the island’s hydraulic planning.”

Local government response

The councilor for Public Works and Water of the Pájara City Council, Alexis Alonso, welcomed the decision:

“This is a crucial step for the construction of the new plant in La Pared, a fundamental work that will guarantee an efficient treatment system aligned with the municipality’s growth. It is a basic piece of infrastructure that reinforces our commitment to responsible water management.”

Project details

  • Investment: approximately €800,000
  • Construction timeline: 8 months
  • Initial capacity: 210 m³/day, serving roughly 2,080 inhabitants
  • Future expansion: up to 420 m³/day, covering about 4,185 equivalent inhabitants

The plant will serve the urban core of La Pared, providing a modern and scalable solution to the island’s water‑treatment needs.
