La Peña’s program stays on track, except the Betancuria‑to‑La Vega pilgrimage.

Temperatures Near 40 °C Make the Pilgrimage Unsafe

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, acting on the maximum heat alert issued by the Canary Islands government, has suspended the traditional pilgrimage from Betancuria to the Vega of Río Palmas, which is part of the festivities honoring Our Lady of La Peña. Temperatures approaching 40 °C render it impossible to carry out the pilgrimage safely for participants, and the route has therefore been cancelled.

However, the traditional offering to the patron saint will still take place at 19:00 at the hermitage in Vega de Río Palmas, the patron’s home.
