Labor Inspectorate Finds Safety Flaws After Gas Leak at Fuerteventura Hotel
The agency warns of the potential risk of explosion or fire and requires improvements in the installation and prevention protocols.
The Labor and Social Security Inspection has identified significant shortcomings in occupational risk prevention following a gas leak recorded in 2025 in the kitchen of a hotel located in the northern central area of Fuerteventura—an incident that could have had serious consequences for workers, customers, and the premises themselves.
The inspection was triggered after a written complaint was submitted to the authority within its legal remit. After visiting the workplace, interviewing company staff and employees, and reviewing technical documentation, inspectors confirmed that the leak originated from the deterioration of a flexible gas‑supply hose connected to a cooking appliance.
Although the incident was repaired immediately, the report notes that the propane gas installation is situated in an area with multiple ignition sources, significantly increasing the risk of explosion or fire.
The Inspection also verified the presence of propane gas tanks on the building’s roof—one unused and another operating at reduced capacity—and found that the company is considering replacing and modernising the system. The authority stresses that such infrastructure must be kept at all times in safe condition in accordance with current regulations.
As a result of the investigation, the Labor Inspection has issued a formal requirement to the hotel to:
- Ensure the safe maintenance of the gas installation.
- Certify the replacement or upgrade of the system through an authorised company.
- Review and update the emergency plan.
- Strengthen information and training for staff on the risks associated with possible gas leaks.
The inspector’s report warns that failure to implement preventive measures in propane‑gas installations can lead to severe personal injury and material damage, and it reiterates the company’s duty to anticipate and control such occupational hazards.
