Lajares Successfully Hosts the Canary Islands Super Ball Cup
The competition is organized by the Island Federation, with the support of the Fuerteventura Island Council and the La Oliva Town Hall
Almost 500 spectators packed the “Venancio Guerra” fighting arena in Lajares, within the municipality of La Oliva, for the 2025 Canary Islands Bola Super Cup. The event, organized by the Island Federation of Fuerteventura for Bola Canaria and Petanca, is a first of its kind in the Canary Islands and receives backing from the Sports Ministry through the Island Sports Aid Programme (ADI) and the La Oliva Town Hall.
In a determined effort to preserve and promote traditional games, the Fuerteventura Island Council, the Federation, and the La Oliva Town Hall joined forces to create a unique, authentic event that turned the Venancio Guerra arena in Lajares into a celebration of the traditional ball game.
After a “majorera” season in which nearly 80 teams competed, the showdown featured league champions against cup champions across men’s, women’s, and youth categories.
- Youth category: The Super Cup was claimed by the team “Los Cacharritos de Antigua,” who defeated “Los Cabritos del Herbania.”
- Women’s category: The top prize went to “Las R que R,” who beat “El Jablito.”
- Men’s category: Victory belonged to “Los Mentolines,” who overcame “Los Chamajos.”
The Island Federation of Fuerteventura for Bola Canaria and Petanca thanked the massive turnout, noting that the competition took place in the archipelago’s first large stadium adapted for the traditional ball game, offering players a truly unique experience.
“This event demonstrates the great importance of the traditional ball sport in Fuerteventura,” said Sports Councilor Luis González, highlighting the value of such gatherings.
The council also reaffirmed the island corporation’s commitment to indigenous sports through the ADI and the traditional games promotion program “No Olvides Lo Nuestro.”
Mayor Isaí Blanco of La Oliva and Sports Councilor Gleiber Carreño emphasized the significance of the Super Cup, crediting the municipality’s dedication to local sports.
The event was further attended by General Director of Indigenous Sports Lorena Hernández, Territorial Planning Councilor Nereida Calero, and other island and municipal representatives.
