Lake Rosa to Offer 2,500 Beds, Two Malls and a Golf Course

The area north of Puerto Lajas has been the subject of both criticism and anticipation for many years.

Drago Canarias in Fuerteventura has warned about the revival of one of the historic plans to further tourist‑ify the northeast coast of the island, within the municipality of Puerto del Rosario. The project, known as the Rosa del Lago partial plan, envisions a total of 2,504 new beds.

The site lies north of the small village of Puerto Lajas (about 1,500 inhabitants), close to the border with the municipality of La Oliva. It includes a five‑star hotel, a 682,000‑square‑metre golf course, two shopping centers, and 1,500 residential units—comprising bungalows, townhouses and villas. The current General Urban Plan (PGO) designates the land for tourism, allowing for more than 2,500 beds.

Approved in 1999, the project was halted by the 2001 Tourism Moratorium and remained dormant. Although the licence was never revoked, the promoters have now decided to reactivate it. Over a year ago they requested the appointment of municipal technicians to coordinate the urbanisation works. Access roads have already been opened, and construction is currently underway, including trenches and sanitation pipelines heading toward the coast.

“It is important that the population knows what is happening here; we are talking about 1,224 km² of land given away to tourism,” said Aceysele Chacón, spokesperson for Drago Canarias in Fuerteventura.
“This is the first of the planned urbanisations on the northeast coast, but we have long been hearing about another one further north, around Playa del Jablito, which is also the gateway to the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, and the road that crosses it is still open.”
