Lola García backs the Canary Islands Decree promoted by the regional government

“Defending this decree is advocating for the rights of our citizens and demanding that the State fulfill its obligations to the islands.”

The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, has voiced her support for the initiative promoted by the autonomous government, known as the Decreto Canarias. The proposal stems from an urgent and extraordinary need “to prevent the political paralysis of the State from continuing to harm the Canary Islands and, directly, islands such as Fuerteventura,” the island’s president explained.

“The failure to approve the State General Budget has prevented, for years, the execution of essential allocations for the provision of vital public services. This is a situation in which the Canary Islands cannot, and must not, remain blocked waiting for Madrid and for the approval—or lack—of a budget.”

In Fuerteventura, this reality is felt with particular intensity “because of our status as an ultra‑peripheral region and double insularity.” This condition raises extra costs in key sectors such as transport, infrastructure, health, water, and energy, among many other priority areas.

The decree outlines essential investments across all these sectors and introduces mechanisms to guarantee financing even in the absence of approved state budgets.

“These measures are fundamental to sustain the economic and social development of Fuerteventura.”

“Defending this decree is defending the rights of the citizens of Fuerteventura, demanding that the State fulfill its obligations, and betting on a Canary Islands that does not stop, that moves forward, and that claims what is due with unity, firmness, and responsibility,” García concluded.
