Lola García expresses concern over the war's potential impact on the economy

The President of the Cabildo and FECAI Joins CCOO in Worry About the Context of Instability

The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and of the Canary Islands Federation (FECAI), Lola García, held a meeting with representatives of Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) Canary Islands to address their demands at both the island and regional levels, focusing especially on the anxiety generated by the ongoing war conflicts and international instability.

Attending the meeting were CCOO Canary Islands’ general secretary Vanesa Frahija, the Secretary of Institutional Participation and Social Movements José Ramón Barroso, and the general secretary of the union’s Island Union Gabriel Rodríguez.

García and the CCOO representatives agreed on the need to study the potential negative impacts that the current international context could have on the quality of life of the archipelago’s residents.

Given this climate of uncertainty, they explained that it is essential to anticipate a series of measures to mitigate the adverse effects of inflation on transport costs, energy, and raw materials, which would otherwise hurt the islands’ economy and residents’ well‑being. Europe is already forecasting an increase in interest rates, a development especially worrying for an ultra‑peripheral region like the Canary Islands, which has a high dependence on external markets.

CCOO also conveyed to García the necessity of strengthening institutional and citizen participation bodies on the islands by creating island councils in areas such as elderly care, housing, and equality. These bodies would boost citizen involvement, bringing together the Cabildos, CCOO, the most representative unions, collectives, and companies from various sectors. García pledged to forward all these demands to the other island Cabildos at the upcoming FECAI General Assembly.

During the meeting, priority issues for Fuerteventura were also discussed, including improving access to housing, increasing socio‑healthcare places, and enhancing mobility.

“These matters occupy the Cabildo’s agenda as a priority, through investment and planning to improve the situation in these and other areas,” García noted.

CCOO Canary Islands positively evaluated the projects that the Cabildo of Fuerteventura is implementing from the Technological Park, aimed at diversifying the island’s economy, fostering innovation, and creating new opportunities. This approach is seen as a way to promote alternative strategic sectors throughout the Canary Islands.
