Lola García Prioritizes the Island's Housing Crisis
Cabildo and ICAVI seek ways to improve young people’s access to housing
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands Institute of Housing (ICAVI) are strengthening their collaboration to enhance housing access for the island’s youth. In a recent working meeting with ICAVI, the island’s governing body expressed its willingness to support the Young Rental Voucher program (Bono Alquiler Joven) for the benefit of Majorero young people.
The Cabildo’s president, Lola García, considers the participation of the Cabildo in this state‑level scheme essential, as it allows young residents to receive rental assistance. García stated:
“Housing is one of the top priorities of this government group, and it is crucial to establish cooperation mechanisms with the competent administrations.”
“This would be another line of work to promote, alongside the Cabildo’s commitment to recover abandoned homes and unfinished constructions, instead of continuing to consume more land.”
The Young Rental Voucher is a state program managed by the autonomous communities, aimed at helping young people pay the rent of their primary residence. Through a collaboration agreement, the Cabildo would back the program in upcoming calls, financing a specific sub‑line within the regional call as a complementary fund.
The Cabildo’s line would be exclusively for applications from young residents of Fuerteventura, allowing those who do not qualify for the general line due to insufficient credit to be assisted using the island’s allocation.
Youth Councilor Adargoma Hernández highlighted the need to create mechanisms that give Majorero youth options for emancipation and decent housing. Treasury Councilor Nuria Cabrera added that:
“To establish this cooperation, proper budget planning is required so that the corresponding financial allocations are included in next year’s budgets.”
ICAVI Director Antonio Ortega emphasized the importance of actions that strengthen a culture of institutional cooperation, enabling public administrations to agree on common policies for the benefit of citizens. According to ICAVI data, 701 applications were submitted in Fuerteventura for the Young Rental Voucher program in 2022.
