Magnitude 2.9 Earthquake Near El Cotillo
The epicenter was located 7 kilometres deep beneath the seabed.
A seismic event measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale struck at midday, roughly 15 kilometres off the coast of El Cotillo on the island of Fuerteventura.
There is no indication that the tremor was felt by residents, and the National Geographic Institute (IGN) classifies the occurrence as a normal event for this part of the archipelago.
“The situation is normal; there is no cause for alarm,” the IGN stated, reassuring the island’s population.
The institute also noted that, despite the ongoing seismic swarm in Tenerife, this activity does not carry the same implications as previous swarms that preceded the Tajogaite eruption on La Palma.
