Magnitude 3.4 quake felt between Tenerife and Gran Canaria

It occurred at 20:17 h, 29 km deep, slightly farther from the events in the ongoing seismic series

A magnitude 3.4 mbLg earthquake between Tenerife and Gran Canaria was felt by people in the towns of La Orotava, La Laguna and Los Realejos on Saturday afternoon.

The quake was recorded by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) at 20:17 h, at a depth of 29 km, a little farther from the tremors that have been part of a seismic series off the coast of Fasnia since last Thursday. Up to the morning of Saturday, that series had logged 40 low‑intensity earthquakes, and in the last few hours it added 12 new tremors.

“These are volcanotectonic events,” explained Itahiza Domínguez, director of the IGN in the Canary Islands, to EFE on Saturday. “Unlike the long‑period events that are usually linked to fluids, such as some recorded beneath El Teide. This event off the coast of Fasnia is not worrisome and does not imply a magmatic intrusion beneath Tenerife, although we will have to monitor how it evolves and whether it intensifies.”
