Majorca Socialists Urge Peace Motions for Gaza and the West Bank
“The institutions of Fuerteventura have a moral duty to show the majoreros and majoreras their position”
The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura is urging all political groups represented in the island’s institutions to agree on motions promoting peace in Gaza and the West Bank. In this regard, the Island Executive Committee of the Majorero PSOE decided in its meeting yesterday that socialist groups in municipal councils and the Island Council should submit a motion supporting the Palestinian people and calling for peace in Gaza and the West Bank, in order to force debate, consensus and a vote.
The first point of the motion, which will be forwarded in the coming days to the municipalities and the Island Council, urges the PSOE of Fuerteventura to back the Spanish Government’s stance in defense of peace, the UN summit on a two‑state solution, and respect for International Humanitarian Law, recognizing Palestine as a state—as a large majority of UN member states are already doing.
José Cabrera, Municipal Policy Secretary of the PSOE of Fuerteventura, stresses that “the institutions of Fuerteventura have a moral duty to show the majoreros and majoreras their position on the development of this conflict that transcends the Middle East and to make public Fuerteventura’s support for the Spanish Government in its international efforts to prioritize peace and protect the civilian population victimized by war.”
“Remaining on the sidelines of such a dark episode in human history is simply immoral,” adds Cabrera. “Therefore we must speak up, debate, and reach an institutional consensus.”
The text of the motion begins by recalling that the Socialist Party and the Spanish Government strongly condemned Hamas’s attacks on 7 October 2023. That unjustifiable terrorist act against Israel caused more than 1,200 deaths and the kidnapping of 251 hostages. In response to that barbarism, the PSOE took a clear stance.
The same sensitivity to barbarism and cruelty toward fellow human beings motivates the PSOE to present this motion, as Israel’s military response has turned into a massive, disproportionate campaign of destruction that, after almost two years, primarily affects the Palestinian civilian population.
- In Gaza, more than 65,000 people have died, including almost 18,500 children; over 159,000 are injured; and nearly two million are displaced, many repeatedly, without guaranteed access to food, drinking water, medical care, or safe shelter.
- In the West Bank, attacks by armed illegal settlers have caused forced displacements, deaths, illegal expropriations, and the expansion of settlements on Palestinian territory.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has confirmed the first official famine in the history of the Middle East, with half a million people in famine phase (IPC‑5) and more than one million in emergency phase (IPC‑4). Hunger, water scarcity, and the collapse of the health system have been used as weapons of war. Moreover, over 21,000 children have acquired some form of disability since the conflict began.
