Majorcan Culture in Twelve Podcasts: Season 1 of “Mares de Jable”

Mares de Jable brings the culture of Fuerteventura to the world with a dozen episodes now available on the major podcast and video platforms. The series explores heritage, history, collective memory, literature, art, ethnography, music, and folklore—told directly by the people who live it.

The island of Fuerteventura has launched a new project dedicated to broadcasting Canary and Majorero culture in all its facets. The Mares de Jable podcast, already on the leading audio‑ and video‑streaming services, covers topics ranging from the recent history of Puerto Cabras to the far‑reaching legacies uncovered by archaeology, traditional architecture, and contemporary cultural expressions such as the sculpture of Juan Miguel Cubas, cinema, and digital art.

The series also delves into language and oral tradition—from improvised verses that link the Canary Islands and the Americas, to the whistled language of the island, and the literary heritage of Unamuno. One episode even honors the memory of marginalized groups, recalling the homosexual inmates confined in the former Tefía colony.

Mares de Jable is a production of Fuerteventura Digital, supported by the Cabildo’s Department of Culture through cultural‑sector grants. Journalist Janey Castañeyra hosts the podcast, with production assistance from fellow journalist Pía Peñagarikano and contributions from various companies and professionals involved in the project’s launch.

The first season comprises 12 thematic episodes, available on the website maresdejable.com and on major platforms such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music.
