Majoreros Solidarios launches petition for 24‑hour veterinary emergency service in Fuerteventura
The Majoreros Solidarios association has started an island‑wide signature‑gathering campaign to demand the implementation of a 24‑hour veterinary emergency service in Fuerteventura, as well as financial support measures for disadvantaged families facing veterinary emergencies with their pets.
The initiative arises from the current lack of continuous urgent veterinary care on the island during nights, weekends and holidays. According to the promoters, this gap can lead to animal deaths or irreversible damage due to the absence of immediate attention. It also creates anxiety for families, forced abandonment of animals, and a general neglect of animal welfare.
Through this campaign, Majoreros Solidarios urges the various administrations—municipalities, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and the Government of the Canary Islands—to, within their competencies, adopt measures such as:
- Implementation or coordination of a 24‑hour veterinary emergency service
- Agreements with veterinary clinics
- Allocation of sufficient financial resources
- Creation of a clear protocol for animal emergencies
- Establishment of a single, 24‑hour operational phone number
In addition, the association calls for the launch of specific economic aid for vulnerable families with pets in veterinary emergency situations.
“Animal welfare cannot depend on commercial opening hours or the occasional financial capacity of families,” the association states, emphasizing that this is a public responsibility aligned with current social values and existing legislation.
They remind that both state and regional laws recognize animals as sentient beings and obligate administrations to protect them, preventing unnecessary suffering. The promoters argue that the lack of continuous urgent veterinary care contradicts the spirit of Law 7/2023 on the protection of animal rights and welfare, creating a territorial inequality compared with other islands.
The signature collection is being carried out in various establishments and partner entities across multiple municipalities of Fuerteventura, aiming to gather the widest possible citizen backing. Majoreros Solidarios thanks the companies, associations, collectives and individuals that have already joined the initiative and encourages more entities to participate to strengthen this social demand.
The campaign remains open, intending to deliver to the competent institutions a request that the promoters deem necessary, feasible, and urgent to improve the protection and care of companion animals in Fuerteventura.
