Man Dies in Fuerteventura After Rescue from Cofete Beach
A man of approximately 56 years died on Monday at Cofete beach, in the municipality of Pájara, after being rescued from the sea with clear signs of drowning, according to the Government of the Canary Islands.
The Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES) received the alert at 13:55 hours when several witnesses reported that they had pulled a swimmer out of the water who was showing “symptoms of drowning” and required medical assistance.
Immediately, the 112 emergency service mobilised all available resources. The following units were dispatched to the scene:
- An ambulance and a medical‑equipped helicopter from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC)
- A rescue helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES)
- Maritime Rescue, Pájara Firefighters, the Civil Guard and Local Police
Upon arrival, SUC medical personnel found the victim in cardiopulmonary arrest. They performed both basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
“The resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful and his death was confirmed.”
The tragedy underscores the dangers of the Atlantic currents at Cofete and the importance of rapid emergency response.
