Marlene Figueroa: Pájara Mayor Knew €250,000 World Windsurf and Wingfoil Grant Was Not Lost

Marlene Figueroa, the tourism counselor of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and vice‑president of the Tourism Board, has confirmed that funding for the 2026 World Windsurf and Wingfoil Championship is guaranteed. The Board’s governing council, which met on 16 December 2025 and included the island’s municipalities—among them Pájara—agreed to keep the amounts of the earmarked grants for 2026, while adjusting the budgeting strategy to comply with new regulatory requirements.

The island’s administration stresses that the budgetary provision for the event is secure, despite earlier alerts from the southern municipal corporation and the Partido Popular warning of a possible loss of the grant in separate statements.

“The grant allocations to the municipalities are maintained, providing a budget solution for 2026 where no municipality loses its financing capacity for events of tourist relevance,” explained Figueroa.

According to the counselor, the council members were briefed on a proposal from the Tourism Board that would preserve the nominated subsidies for municipalities hosting events in the first half of 2026 and, subsequently, cover the second‑half events through a credit modification of the same amount.

This approach was presented and approved by the council, whose members include all municipalities of Fuerteventura, Pájara included.

“The mayor of Pájara knew that the €250,000 grant for the World Windsurf and Wingfoil Championship is not lost. On the contrary, the grants for all municipalities are maintained,” added Marlene Figueroa.
