Minors Arriving in the Canary Islands From Today Will

Transfer of New Arrivals Joins the Relocation of Thousands Already on the Islands

Migrant minors who arrive from this Monday, September 1, in the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla must be transferred to other autonomous communities within fifteen days, under a reception that is mandatory by law for the destination territories.

The relocation of these new arrivals is combined with the transfer of roughly 3,000 migrant minors already hosted in the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla. They will be gradually re‑settled, with a maximum deadline of one year, to other regions of Spain.

These two components form the compulsory solidarity mechanism launched in recent days, after the government declared an extraordinary migration contingency for the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla. The three territories meet the requirement of tripling the reception quota assigned to the various communities, reaching 32.6 migrants per 100,000 inhabitants.
