Mogán Mayor Urges Vacationers to “Ignore” Tourism Recommendations

She warns that following the guidance could lead to the irreversible loss of their licensing titles.

The mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, urged owners of vacation homes (VV) across the Canary Islands on Wednesday to disregard the latest recommendations issued by the regional tourism minister, Jéssica de León. Bueno cautioned that complying with the minister’s directives could “cause the irreversible loss of their licensing titles,” according to Tiempo de Canarias.

“De León is now asking owners to deregister their vacation rentals and re‑apply for registration with the island councils before submitting the required prior activity notice to the municipalities, as mandated by the new law,” Bueno explained. “This would erase the minimum one‑year consolidation period that owners have already achieved.”

Bueno described the official statement released by the regional tourism department on Tuesday afternoon as “seriously irresponsible and reckless.” She added that it contains “inaccurate assertions and pushes vacation‑rental owners toward actions that could directly harm them.”

She also criticized the fact that the new law has not yet been published in the Official Canary Islands Gazette (BOC), calling it “unheard of” and “ridiculous.” According to Bueno, the minister’s acknowledgment that the law needs reform “highlights the lack of consensus and the poor drafting process.”
