Morro Velosa Lookout Undergoes Restoration Again
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has launched repair and adaptation works on the Morro Velosa viewpoint, preparing it for a future reopening to the public. Island president Lola García, tourism councilor Marlene Figueroa, and Fuerteventura councilor Rayco León visited the site, with the works expected to be completed before the end of 2026 thanks to coordination between the Tourism and Museums departments. Betancuria mayor Enrique Cerdeña was also present.
“These repair works will make the space more functional and attractive, a place of great interest for residents and visitors, and one of the points on Fuerteventura where the immensity of our arid zones is best perceived,” — Lola García, President of the Cabildo.
- Investment: Over €1 million.
- Contractor: Ecología y Construcción Fesumar S.L.
- Program: Part of the Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan “Fuerte por Naturaleza,” promoted by the island’s Tourism Department and Museums of Fuerteventura, which aims to renew museum spaces across the island.
Scope of the Renovation
The Morro Velosa viewpoint, a structure more than 25 years old that will host the Interpretation Center of Arid Zones, suffers from age‑related deficiencies that threaten its conservation. The comprehensive reform will address:
- Pavements and entrance porch
- Roof and external cladding
- Interior and exterior carpentry
- Layout and accessibility improvements
- Expansion of the café and construction of a new terrace
These upgrades are intended to ensure the long‑term preservation of the site while enhancing the visitor experience.
Funding and Strategic Goals
The “Fuerte por Naturaleza” plan is financed by European NextGeneration funds within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Its objective is to boost tourism competitiveness through new infrastructure and initiatives such as the Morro Velosa project. The plan supports a range of actions across all municipalities in collaboration with local town halls.
