Multiple flights diverted this morning after a drone was spotted south of the airport
The presence of a drone south of Fuerteventura is causing delays and flight diversions at El Matorral Airport on Sunday morning.
According to reports, a drone spotted in the Playa Blanca area, south of the runway, forced the diversion of a Ryanair flight that had departed from Santiago de Compostela and was scheduled to land on the island today. The aircraft was rerouted to Lanzarote Airport, leaving passengers uncertain about when—or if—they will be picked up and whether they will need to change islands.
“The plane was diverted to Lanzarote, so we don’t know what time they’ll come for us or if we’ll have to switch islands,” said some of the temporarily stranded travelers, adding a note of irony and resignation.
Airport information panels began displaying an increasing number of cancellations, prompting passengers to remark:
“You can’t see any plane taking off or landing, and the screens are showing more and more cancellations.”
