Multiple Flights to Fuerteventura Diverted to Gran Canaria
South winds complicate some arrivals to the island
The Canary Islands airports recorded several incidents on Tuesday due to adverse weather conditions caused by low‑pressure system Claudia. As of 14:00, AENA reported diversions at the airports of La Palma, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura.
The islands’ airports are shielded from the prevailing wind, so when strong south‑west winds blow, as today, “operational problems usually arise in the eastern islands,” explained Viki Palma, head of the planning unit of 112 Canarias on La Radio Canaria.
Consequently, flights arriving from Helsinki, Munich, Gothenburg and Oslo that were scheduled to in Fuerteventura on Wednesday had to be diverted to Gran Canaria.
