Nationalist Parliamentary Group endorses César Toledo as new RTVC administrator
Coalition Canary deputy José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted the major challenges facing the public broadcaster and announced his group’s favorable vote for César Toledo as the new General Administrator of Radio Televisión Canaria (RTVC).
“RTVC was created as a tool for territorial cohesion, truthful and plural information, and the defence of our identity,” Bermúdez said during the parliamentary session.
He reminded the assembly that the channel “was originally a project promoted by Coalition Canary, which continues to defend its strategic value for the islands. That is why we care deeply about what happens to it.”
Qualification Assessment
Bermúdez stressed that the candidacy presented by the regional government complies with all the suitability and compatibility guarantees required by Law 13/2014. Beyond formal requirements, he argued that Toledo’s professional profile is well‑suited to the current and urgent challenges confronting the public broadcaster.
Key points of Toledo’s résumé:
- More than 38 years of experience in journalism, radio, television, digital media, and institutional offices.
- Direct involvement in Canary public television for eight years during its founding phase, working in content and self‑promotion.
“That double perspective—having worked in newsrooms and knowing how the institution operates—gives him a broad view of Canary reality and what RTVC represents for this archipelago,” Bermúdez added.
Challenges Ahead for RTVC
The deputy described the broadcaster’s situation as decisive and listed the main challenges that the new administrator must address:
- Completion of the regulatory update currently under processing, aimed at modernising the audiovisual model and solidifying its status as a fully public enterprise.
- Finalisation of the radio agreement.
- Technological adaptation, embracing new narratives and current consumption habits.
- Promotion of internal talent and professional development.
Political Context
Bermúdez also pointed out the contradictions of opponents who previously criticised the former administrator for lacking a journalistic background, yet now question Toledo’s credentials.
“We will exercise rigorous, constant, and demanding oversight,” he concluded, confirming the Nationalist Group’s affirmative vote after verifying that all legal and professional requirements have been met.
