Nationalist Unity in the Canary Islands Is More Essential Than Ever
Oscar Hernández elected president of the Constituent Congress of Primero Canarias
Municipalists of Primero Canarias held their constituent congress on Friday, aiming to offer citizens “the municipal experience as a tool for work,” according to party co‑founder Óscar Hernández.
Hernández, who was elected president of Municipalists Primero Canarias at a gathering of more than 1,500 people, was joined by representatives of Coalición Canaria (including Canary President Fernando Clavijo), the PP, PSOE, ASG, AHI, AM and other parties and civil‑society associations.
“The project is born with a clear commitment to manage the Canary Islands bravely, progressively and nationalist‑ly, hand in hand with its people. This is the beginning of a new era,” Hernández said in his inaugural speech, emphasizing that the movement will place the archipelago’s welfare above any other interest.
He added that defending the sovereignty of the Canary Islands will be the formation’s absolute priority, explaining that “economic activity and job creation will be fundamental pillars for policies on housing, health, education and social welfare, always with the future of young people and their professional development at the centre of our proposals.”
Primero Canarias also wants to create a convergence table for the Canary Islands that would articulate “a nationalist unity with a specific programme that allows us to be heard from Madrid and makes the islands a key point in any legislation, highlighting our own singularity.”
The proposal has been well received by Coalición Canaria, “which looks on it very favourably,” while Nueva Canarias has rejected it; Hernández remains hopeful that time will restore trust between the two formations.
“We have not been idle these five months. Some think we were a flash in the pan, but we are a garden in both summer and winter,” emphasized Teodoro Sosa.
“This is the message we want to send to citizens fed up with ruptures: it is worth uniting, and our deputies in Madrid must not stay silent, they must discuss and fight for our rights, bringing the issues to the islands.”
