NC-BC questions regional funding in Canary Islands’ 2027 housing budget
Carmen Hernández says state funding would cover most of the proposed rise in housing spending. The report gives no specific allocation for Fuerteventura.
Nueva Canarias–Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) MP Carmen Hernández has criticised the Canary Islands Government’s housing budget for 2027. She says most of the proposed increase would come from the Spanish state.
Hernández spoke in committee on 4 November 2026. She said the housing budget would rise by €48.6 million. Of that sum, €45 million would come from the State Housing Plan. By her calculation, the regional government would provide just €3.6 million in extra funding.
For Fuerteventura residents following housing plans, the debate concerns funding across the Canary Islands. The report gives no specific allocation or new housing project for the island.
Funding priorities under scrutiny
Hernández compared the rise in housing spending with the total Canary Islands budget for 2027, which stands at €13,209 million. The overall budget is up €717.6 million on 2026. She said the proposed spending did not do enough to tackle the housing crisis.
She also questioned housing minister Pablo Rodríguez about his stated aim to build an average of 4,000 homes a year. Hernández estimated that the full €48.6 million increase would pay for around 388 homes if spent on construction.
Amendments planned
NC-BC plans to submit an amendment seeking funds for families recognised as entitled to social housing. The money would help them gain ownership of their homes through Visocan.
Hernández also said there was too little funding for the empty homes programme and Pro Hogar. The latter supports vulnerable families. She nevertheless acknowledged the increase in funding for young people’s rental support.
The account published by Onda Fuerteventura sets out Hernández’s criticism. It does not include a government response.
