New 2.6‑Magnitude Quake North of El Cotillo

The tremor was detected by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) on Friday afternoon, with its epicenter located in Atlantic waters close to the island.

The IGN reported a magnitude mbLg 2.6 earthquake in the Atlantic‑Canary zone. The seismic event occurred at 18:42:49 local time, according to data provided by the Sub‑Secretariat and the Directorate General of the state agency.

The epicenter was pinpointed at 29.09° N latitude and 14.25° W longitude, in a maritime area of the Atlantic Ocean near the Canary archipelago. The recorded depth was 15 km.

No material damage or related incidents have been reported so far. This magnitude is considered low, and such seismic movements are relatively common around the Canary Islands due to the region’s tectonic and volcanic activity.

The IGN continuously monitors seismic activity across the national territory and regularly publishes updated information on earthquakes detected both on the peninsula and in nearby insular and maritime zones.
