New branding and museum upgrade for La Alcogida Ecomuseum, €205,000 tender

Within the Strategic Museum Plan of Fuerteventura is the renewal of the La Alcogida Ecomuseum, a project to give the visitor centre a fresh image and a proper museum‑ization. The Cabildo’s work is being tendered for €205,522, in a joint procedure with Gesprotur and funded by the Government of the Canary Islands.

The La Alcogida Ecomuseum will soon boast a renewed image and museum‑ization thanks to an improvement project driven by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, framed within the island’s Strategic Museum Plan, whose aim is to re‑value and modernise the island’s museum network.

Located in Tefía, the La Alcogida Ecomuseum is a heritage reference for Fuerteventura, reflecting the way of life, architecture and domestic and cultural practices of the Majorero society of the 20th century.

According to a communiqué from the island’s institution, the museum’s museographic plan involves an investment of €205,522, financed from the funds allocated in the Canary Islands Strategy for Island Tourism Infrastructure. The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has processed the tender through the public company Gesprotur, which manages the administrative procedure, with financing from the Government of the Canary Islands.

“This strategy includes about twenty actions aimed not only at opening new centres but also at modernising and renewing existing spaces, with the goal of increasing their appeal for both visitors and the local population,” said Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura.
“We also underline the importance of inter‑administrative collaboration as a key tool to finance and develop projects of this magnitude, which help preserve our heritage, strengthen island identity and generate opportunities linked to culture and sustainable tourism.”

In this context, the La Alcogida project will feature an integral museographic plan—already under tender—intended to reinforce its value as a unique cultural product, integrating Majorero culture and tradition into its narrative and diversifying the island’s cultural offer.

All information related to the tender can be consulted on the State Contracting Platform.

La Alcogida: Trades and Traditions of Fuerteventura

La Alcogida is one of the main ethnographic references of Fuerteventura, recreating a traditional rural settlement from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It consists of seven buildings of varying size and typology, reflecting the economic differences among the families that inhabited them.

The houses have been restored respecting the techniques and materials of traditional Majorero architecture, becoming a reference space for understanding the island’s historic construction methods.

Today, the houses retain the names of their former occupants, and several rooms operate as artisan workshops, showcasing traditional trades such as palm weaving, carving (calado) and pottery. These spaces allow visitors to experience the recent Majorero way of life and production. The range of traditional trades displayed in the museum has evolved over time, and this renovation project will also modernise the museum‑ization of the site.
