New customs fee raises costs for Fuerteventura shoppers ordering from outside the EU
A €2 handling fee per product category was due to start on 1 November. It adds to existing customs charges on non-EU orders delivered to Fuerteventura.
Online shoppers in Fuerteventura face extra costs on orders sent from outside the European Union. Onda Fuerteventura reported the changes on 30 October. A new customs handling fee of €2 per product category was due to start on 1 November 2026.
The report says the charge is part of the EU’s customs reform. It also applies to deliveries to the Canary Islands. The platforms mentioned include AliExpress, Shein and Temu. However, the key factor is where the goods are sent from, not which website sells them.
Charges are per category, not per parcel
For shipments worth up to €150, the €2 fee adds to a €3 customs duty per product category. The report says that duty has applied since July 2026.
An order with just one category would therefore incur €5 in combined charges, before any taxes or other handling costs. A parcel with several customs categories can incur multiple charges. The fee is not a single flat payment per parcel.
Onda Fuerteventura reports that the European Consumer Centre has expressly confirmed that the €3 duty applies to shipments bound for the Canary Islands. The islands are outside the VAT area and have their own indirect tax, IGIC. However, they remain within the EU customs territory.
Dispatch location matters
The report says these customs duties do not apply to goods already in Spain when the order is placed. The same applies to goods already in another EU country. An order from an Asian platform may therefore not face the same charges as goods sent directly from China.
Citing Spain’s Tax Agency, the report says the platform may collect payment at checkout. The carrier may instead collect it on delivery. This depends on the commercial arrangements. The operators responsible for importing the goods must meet the customs obligation. However, they may pass the costs on through final prices.
